I’m a storyteller, of stories true and imagined. Of other people’s stories, and of my own. For most of my adult life I’ve been a journalist, working in the U.S. (I’m from Boston) and overseas, mainly in the Middle East (I used to live/work in Cairo) and South Africa, where I’ve been based for most of the last thirty years (Cape Town). I’ve covered everything from tobacco-spitting contests and KKK clashes in Mississippi to forced removals in apartheid South Africa to the first intifadah to game capture in a South African reserve to diamond smuggling to tracking with the Khomani San Bushmen in the Kalahari, and beyond. I’ve taught journalism and writing – fiction, creative non-fiction, and expository – at Harvard University, the American University in Cairo, and the University of Cape Town, and run workshops around the world on covering conflict more constructively. I’ve been an editor on several different publications, including Harper’s magazine in New York; I’ve also edited books and scripts. I was head scriptwriter for our production company, Ubuntu TV  and Film Productions, and associate producer there. My debut novel, Garden of Dreams, was published by Penguin in 2014; I’m currently working on a second novel and a memoir. I love helping others tell their stories…
